What is road risks insurance?

Road risk insurance is the minimum level of cover required to drive vehicles on a motor trade policy.  This covers you to drive vehicles in connection with your motor trade job – whether that is servicing customers’ vehicles, buying and selling vehicles, carrying out MOT tests, working as a mobile mechanic, operating a car wash or working as a valeter… wherever you sit behind the wheel of a customer vehicle, road risks insurance is necessary.

What types of road risks policy are there?

A road risks policy covers you to drive on a third party only, third party fire and theft or comprehensive basis.  Click the links to find out more.

Why do I need road risks insurance cover?

A private car insurance policy only covers the registered keeper of a vehicle, or their spouse, to drive a vehicle for their own personal use.  It does not cover driving other people’s vehicles.  So for anybody involved in trading, servicing or repairing cars or other vehicles, a different type of insurance policy is required.

Anybody involved in trading vehicles will need to ensure that they update the motor trade insurance database (MID) on a frequent basis with any cars that you buy and sell, to make sure they are covered on your road risk insurance policy.  You can read our separate FAQs about the MID to find out more.

Does road risks insurance cover me to drive any vehicle?

No – chances are, there will be restrictions or exclusions on the type of vehicle that is covered by the policy.  It is also worth bearing in mind that you only get insurance for the trade value of a vehicle on a road risks policy, so it isn’t designed to supplement or replace a standard personal car insurance policy – though you may be able to transfer your no-claims bonus from this type of policy to your motor trade policy.

What other cover might I need?

Do you employ anybody in connection with your motor trade business?  Then you will need employers’ liability insurance, which protects you in the event of a claim from an employee, and is a legal requirement in many cases.  You should also consider public liability insurance if you invite members of the public into your garage or even on to your driveway at home – one accident involving a member of the public could leave you exposed to an insurance claim.
